Two-a-days

Day 2 of Sports Drills Theme Week – Football

No pre-blast for today, other than giving DQ a heads up that we’d be on the Y fields so he needed to plan his footwear accordingly.

Conditions: 77 deg F, humidity 94%

CoP

  • Plank during disclaimer
  • Merkins IC * 11
  • MNC IC * 11
  • Chinooks IC * 11 each way
  • T^3 IC * 11
  • Indian Run a long path around to get to the YMCA soccer field

The Thang

A few PAX chose to modify to a low impact workout.  Since they broke off from the rest of the team during football practice, and we have no idea if they actually practiced or worked out, we’ll call them the Kickers for today.

The rest of us started with the 1st of 2-a-day practice.

  • Lineman have to function on all 4’s, so we started with a bear crawl the width of the field
  • Karaoke back across the field
  • Dak Prescott back across the field (a QB hip twist movement made famous in a pre-game warmup by Dak last year … when sports were actually played)
  • Karaoke back across the field facing the other direction

Form an arc with Coach Crocker at the center.

Coach called for “Chop Rolls” which are basically fast mountain climbers and then when Coach calls left or right, roll that direction quickly returning to chop form after.  Did this for about 1 minute.

Next, Coach called for “Up-Downs”, which are basically burpees but only done when Coach calls “down”.  Keep your feet chopping at all times.  Did this for about 1 minute. (sidenote, I forgot to mention this, but we called these “Green Bays” back in my football days of glory.  I never understood why).

Next, Coach called for Monkey Rolls.  Groups of 3 would make a figure 8 by jumping over a PAX that is rolling under him.  As with other times I’ve used this workout, we are horrible at this, but it wears you out.  Again did these for about 1 minute.

Next, some passing drills.  The QB would call an exercise and choose a receiver.  The receiver would choose the amount of reps.  Then he’d run a post route of at least 15 yard.  If he catches it, we do the reps.  If he misses it, we do double the reps.  I can’t remember all of the details, but it was something like:

  • Bonnie Blairs * 20/leg (missed catch by DQ, pass by BC)
  • Merkins * 20 (missed catch )
  • Monkey Humpers * 30 (missed catch, thrown by Bogey)
  • World War II’s * 10 (catch by Pergo, thrown by Doughboy)
  • Decline Merkins * 20 (missed catch by Flat Tire, thrown by Gilligan)
  • LBCs * 40 (missed catch)
  • Hello Dollies * 20 (catch by Frozone, pass by R-12)
  • American Hammers * 5 (The Catch by Radar, duck thrown by Flat Tire)

End of the morning practice

Upon return for our afternoon practice, we rinse-and-repeated our morning practice.  We changed out the Dak’s for Duck Walks across the field.  And we did the Up-downs back at the flag at the end, with the Kickers this time.  They had to do SOME work today.

Highlight of the afternoon practice was Radar’s hands.  I mean he’s basically Calvin Jonhson (insert not-so-subtle Georgia Tech greatness reference here).  Must have worn sticky gloves to the workout today, because how he landed that catch from Flat Tire’s awful throw was amazing. As a result, we only had to do 5 American Hammer’s.

Live look-in at Radar this gloom.

Mosey back to the flag and finish up with a quick round up-downs.

#-arama, Namearama, Announcements, Pledge, Prayer

Sasquatch on Saturday starting at 0430 from the AO.  DQ basically hard committed … I was standing next to him and that’s what I heard.

Radar is moving his daughter Saturday, Clog is moving his whole family Saturday.  Reach out to them if you can help with the heavy lifting.

Continued prayers for Swabbie and his family, and Deuce’s parents.

Thanks for the opportunity to lead.
