On this week 20-23 November 1943- The Battle of Tarwa. USMC meet stiff resistance on heavily fortified Bieto atoll of Tarwa in Central Pacific. Over 6400 KIA during the 76 hour battle. Four Marines received the Medal of Honor (three posthumously). This is the first time a recipient of the Medal of Honor was photographed during their heroic deed. 1LT Bonnyman was photographed as he was taking out several Japanese machine-gun pill boxes. He was KIA but his actions allowed his platoon to continue forward.
