Cinco de Mayo commemorates the anniversary of Mexico's victory over the Second French Empire at the Battle of Puebla (de Los Angeles) in 1862, led by General Ignacio Zaragoza. Mexicans lost <100 of 2,000 men while French lost 500 of 6,000. French invaded because Mexico paused repayment of their debt due to insolvency. France would end up winning the war only to retreat in 1867.
Not Mexican Independence Day which was on Sept 16, 1810 from Spanish. It’s celebrated more in the US than Mexico.
