The air was thick enough to chew, and the darkness was absolute as four brave souls stepped out for five off-site miles. We successfully peer-pressured two of our corporate co-workers into joining the gloom—including our collective boss. Leading from the front, Boss! Welcome to the conditioning.
The highlight of the trip happened the afternoon before the run. Betty Crocker, assuming a 5-star establishment caters to elite pre-dawn athletes, walked up to the concierge desk with absolute confidence to secure the hotel's "loaner headlamps" for the next morning.
The blank stare from the staff was priceless. Turns out, no matter how fancy the thread count is, they don't keep tactical night-running gear in the lobby vault. Lesson learned: always pack your own high-beams, Crocker.
Despite running blind through the soup, all 4 PAX crushed the 5 miles and made it back intact. Mumble chatter was high, and nobody got fired. Great push, men
