Decathletes In Training

The pre-blast for today stated that Dan & Dave wouldn’t even be able to handle this workout.  No one got the reference to the 1992 build up to the Barcelona summer Olympic games and the Reebok ad campaign featuring Dan O’Brien and Dave Johnson, who were 2 U.S. decathletes.  Today’s theme week workout would be training for the Olympics, or at least an F3 version of the Decathlon.

And we’re off …

The Thang

10 exercise stations separated by a mosey between each.

  • 1/10th of a mile sprint (down the lane to the backlot)
  • Mosey to the pull up bars
  • 20 pull ups
  • Mosey to the soccer field next to the stadium
  • 30 broad jumps
  • Mosey to the cindy area, cindy’s were already pulled out
  • 40 squat thrusters
  • Mosey a lap back to the cindy’s
  • 50 kettle bell swings
  • Mosey to the picnic table pavilion
  • 60 dips (and for time, we did some of the merkins here)
  • Mosey back to the cindy’s
  • 70 curls + remaining merkins
  • Skipped this mosey for time
  • 80 merkins (completed with dips and curls)
  • Mosey to the flag
  • 90 squats
  • 100 burpees

Time was short, so the Q called that we could do 21s to reduce the number of burpees IF we stopped together.  Jiminy was off, but to be fair, I didn’t explain 21s really and he’s still a young PAX.  We didn’t fault him. Frozone almost ruined it for everyone though.

Do 10 burpees … the Q made the executive decision that each burpee counted as 10, therefore we got all 100.

But we still owed 90 squats, so we did those to finish us out.

Also, YHC made a sacrifice to the Cindy God’s after curls. May she rest in peace … Or pieces.

Reason for this is to learn from leading, especially where we fail.  And to help future theme week Qs as they plan their weeks out:

Things that worked well this week:

  • Always moving
  • Lots of variety
  • Setting up on slack the low impact groups on Monday and Wednesday.  That encouraged guys to post who otherwise may not have done so.

Things to improve:

  • Finishing on time – Monday and Wednesday were tight on time, Friday finished on time, but we didn’t get all of the burpees
  • The Q did not bring watermelon on Friday … apparently that’s a new tradition/expectation
  • Don’t overcomplicate the workout in trying to create the theme.  I think I did better at this than previous years, but simple is always effective
